Darkling
Darkling, an intense operatic theater work that explores memory and loss in the 20th Century, was created for the New York City Off-Broadway stage by Michael Joseph Comlish from a book length poem by Anna Rabinowitz. It was developed in workshops spanning three years, and premiered in 2006 at the Thirteenth Street Theater. The haunting music was composed by Stephan Weisman. The production brought together uptown Metropolitan Opera talent with downtown experimental creative forces.
Accoustic sounds and voices clashed with traditional operatic voices, and multilayered video projections, calling to mind Meyerhold, Ives, Brecht, Martha Clark and Richard Foreman. Portions were presented in workshop at the Guggenheim Museum’s Works & Process series.
Comlish created a touring version with his own film edit with live string
quartet and voices, touring Berlin and Gniezno, Poland in June 2007. The
production is featured in Theater
World.
